BACK PAIN

Backpain is not confined to a specific age group as it can be seen in older population at the same time school going children too. It most commonly affects desk -bound professionals. Back pain to be precise is a SYMPTOM and not a diagnosis. It is like a patient having fever (SYMPTOM) because of typhoid (DIAGNOSIS).

Most backpains have no specific cause and can be rightly treated with specific exercise.

Backpain can present as :

  • Simple backpain across the back
  • Pain radiating across the course of the nerve or in patches
  • Tingling, numbness
  • Muscle weakness
  • Mechanical deformities

We at HappyLife Physiotherapy perform an extensive mechanical evaluation using the McKenzie method of Mechanical Diagnosis and Therapy where patient is given an explanation about their pain. Patient is also guided about posture care and how to manage their pain when a similar episode arises in the future.

NECK PAIN

In today's time, majority of our jobs demand prolonged sitting in front of the computers. On the other hand there are some people who are involved in rigorous physical activities like lifting, turning etc. Prolonged awkward postures or positions and disruption in the neck joint are main reasons giving rise to neck pains.

Neck pain may have various presentations ranging from:

  • Pain only in the neck
  • Pain radiating in the shoulder blades /chest region
  • pain radiating in the arms and /forearms, hand
  • Tingling /numbness /muscle weakness
  • Headaches, dizziness
  • Cervical deformities

The McKenzie method helps us in rightly classifying patients on the basis of their symptomatic and mechanical presentations.

SCIATICA

Sciatica refers to pain that radiates along the course of the sciatic nerve which originates from the lumbar spine and runs backwards down the hips, thighs, legs upto the foot. Such patients typically complain of severe leg pain which is constant accompanied by numbness and muscle weakness. In general such patients are advised mainly for exercises, some for epidural injection blocks and few for surgeries too depending upon the severity of their condition and the duration of the condition.

The assessment using the McKenzie method helps us in determining if the patient would be better with exercise or would require some other intervention.

JOINT PAIN

(Shoulder, Hip, Elbow, Knee, Wrist, Ankle, Heel Pain)

WHAT IS A JOINT?

It is the area where two bones are attached for the purpose of permitting body parts to move. Capsules, ligaments, muscles, synovium, cartilage, menisci, bursae are the structures around and across the joints. Many a times displacement of some tissue in and around the joint can give rise to pain which most of the times is rapidly managed with specific exercise. At times scaring and shortening of tissues surrounding the joints can give rise to pain which requires specific stretching exercises.

Evidence says that nerves originating from the cervical spine can give referred pain to the shoulder, elbow, wrist and joints of the hand. Similarly, the nerves originating from the lumbar spine can give referred pain down the hip, knees, ankle, foot joints etc.

At Happylife Physiotherapy we screen the patient thoroughly and try to find their root cause of symptoms based on their Symptomatic, mechanical and functional baselines following the McKenzie method.

SPORTS AND RECREATIONAL INJURIES

Sports and Recreational injuries have more involvement of active personalities engaged in sports and physical leisure activities. We generally encounter ligament sprains, muscle strains, muscle pulls, overuse tendon injuries (repetitive /cumulative stress on muscle tendon).

Such patients are screened in finding out if there lies a problem in the joints, ligaments, muscles, tendons and accordingly the prognosis is predicted.

FITNESS
